Deaf or Hard of Hearing Procedures
Through the Office of Disability Services, accommodations and services are available, on request, to assist deaf and hard of hearing students in completing their academic requirements and to attend campus programs and activities. The following guidelines are intended to help you to know what to expect when working with our office, and when requesting academic accommodations.
- Documentation (see Guidelines for Documentation for Students who are d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing) is required to establish eligibility for academic accommodations and to register with the Office of Disability Services.
- You are encouraged to register as soon as possible before the start of each semester, to insure that appropriate accommodations are established. To register, you must meet with the Coordinator of Student Services to review documentation and determine what accommodations are needed. If an interpreter is needed for this meeting, you should notify the Office of Disability Services in advance so this can be arranged.
- You must provide a copy of your class schedule to the Office of Disability Services before interpreter services or other accommodations (such as captioning) can be arranged. This will be shared with the interpreter services so they can insure interpreters are available when needed.
- If you are receiving financial support through the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, make sure your Official Authorization form is sent to the Office of Disability Services. Also, provide the name and phone number of your Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor to the Coordinator.
- If you need to arrange for interpreter services outside of your regularly scheduled class times, we ask that you submit your request at least two weeks prior to the event (or as soon as you are aware of the need). This request should go to the Coordinator.
- If you are making use of any testing accommodations, you will need to complete the appropriate paperwork (Adaptive Examination Request form) and turn it in on time (at least 7 days in advance of the scheduled exam).
