Notetaking Accommodation Procedures
- When choosing to use your accommodations, you must make an appointment with each of your instructors to discuss your needs. If you do not meet with your instructors, you run the risk of not having some or all of your accommodations provided in a timely manner.
- To discuss your need for notetaking accommodations, meet with your professor as early as possible in the semester (before the semester starts, or during the first week of classes). Ask your professor to assist with the process of finding a notetaker. Attached to your accommodations letter will be an additional page that explains what you are asking your professor to do.
- Professors can either choose a notetaker or make an anonymous announcement regarding the notetaking position. Or, if you are comfortable, you can ask a friend or fellow student to volunteer for the position. This will allow you to establish a good relationship with your notetaker.
- Once your notetaker has been identified, you and your notetaker will arrange a system for sharing notes that works for both of you. There are several options that might work:
- You and your notetaker may find it convenient to use NCR paper, which is available in the Office of Disability Services.
- Your notetaker may use the copy machines in the Office of Disability Services to copy notes, and give you the copies at a time agreed to by both of you.
- If your notetaker takes notes using a laptop or notebook computer, it may work to have the notes sent to you via e-mail.
- You may wish to maintain a mailbox in the Disability Services office for notes to be deposited. If you do, you will need to notify your contact person so the mailbox can be set up.
- You are responsible for your own academic success. Having a notetaker is a reasonable accommodation, and is NOT a substitute for attending class.
