The Office of Disability Services (ODS)...

  • Serve students with these disabilities:
    • Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
    • Blind or Low Vision
    • Deaf or Hard of Hearing
    • Health Realted
    • Learning Disabiltiy
    • Physical
    • Psychological
  • Provides services to students with disabilities who are in undergraduate, graduate and professional programs, including law, medicine and veterinary medicine.
  • Is the office on campus that provides academic accommodations that are federally mandated.
  • Reports to the Office of Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs.
  • Works with every department on the MU campus to serve students with disabilities, and regularly interacts with the majority of faculty on an individual basis.
  • Has converted approximately 1,500 textbooks onto tape or into digital format and has received approximately 275 digital textbooks directly from publishers at no cost to the University.
  • Administers at least 3100 exams per year and 1550 or more exams per semester.
  • Has 5 assistive listening devices available free of charge to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Received the Education Program of the Year Award in October 2001 from the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Governor's Council on Disability.
  • Provides services to students with temporary injuries such as broken legs, arms and hands with on-campus transportation and exam accommodations.
  • Provides on-campus transportation to any student with mobility limitations who registers with the office.
  • Offers the opportunity for students to meet with staff one on one regarding study and organizational skills and time management.
  • Is a liaison between faculty members and students to insure compliance with the federal mandates for academic accommodations and success.
  • Staff are available to consult with faculty members on issues of reasonable accommodation.
  • Must register a student with a disability before faculty can provide ADA/Section 504 required accommodations.
  • Promotes independence in each of our students, preparing them for futures in the non-academic world. Students are encouraged to view their college experience as preparation for the future.
