Notetaking

Q: I have a student who needs a notetaker. What do I need to do when this accommodation is requested?

A: We ask that you help by announcing to the class that there is a need for a volunteer notetaker. Once a student informs you he or she would like to volunteer, we ask that you provide that student's name to the requesting student so he or she can make contact with that individual and make arrangements for note exchange. Generally, we provide information about this along with our Letter when this accommodation is being requested.

Q: What if a student comes to me needing a notetaker but I don't have anyone in my class who has volunteered. What do I do?

A: You may want to make a second announcement to the class. Alternatively, if you know of a student in the class whom you feel would be a good notetaker, you may want to talk with him or her about becoming one. Finally, you should contact ODS if no notetaker has volunteered so that alternate arrangements can be made.

Q: Students sometimes ask me for copies of overheads or Power Point presentations. Do I have to give these to the student?

A: Some students with disabilities have difficulty seeing your visual presentations (i.e. overheads or Power Point presentations.) In those instances, it is helpful for the student to have a hard copy of what is being presented in class, preferably in advance, so he or she can follow along.
