Testing
Q: Am I required to provide exam accommodations to students who request it?
A: Yes, but only if the student has presented you with a current Letter of Accommodations for the current semester from ODS outlining the need for accommodations and stating the allowable accommodations. The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504 requires that qualified students with disabilities have equal access to education, and this includes exam accommodations.
Q: Am I able to provide exam accommodations myself or do students have to take all exams and quizzes at ODS?
A: Once you have been presented with a current Letter of Accommodation, instructors are encouraged to accommodate students themselves if at all possible by providing a quiet, separate space and/or extended time. Other accommodations such as readers, scribes, equipment, etc. are best provided by ODS. Request Forms need not be completed for those exams you will accommodate yourself.
Q: Students with disabilities ask me to fill out the Adaptive Examination Request Form. I have a million things to do. I don't mind if they use the accommodations, but do I have to fill out the form?
A: Yes. In order for ODS to administer exams appropriately and ensure that students receive all allowable accommodations, Request Forms must be completed. You may find it helpful to complete the form with the student present, so you both fully understand the arrangements that have been made.
Q: What are some of the types of exam accommodations available to students with disabilities?
A: Accommodations include, but are not limited to the following: extended time (usually 50% extra, but in some cases more); a reader (a person who reads exam questions to the student); a scribe (a person who writes answers verbatim); a computer (for voice activation, magnification or other adaptive technology options); a Brailled exam; enlarged print; use of a closed circuit TV to enlarge print; distraction-reduced space; cassette player with headphones.
Q: Why is triple time given?
A: Triple time is approved on a case by case basis after supporting documentation has been provided and the student has been interviewed. For example, in some cases triple time may be recommended to allow a student additional time on types of exams that require extensive writing or drawing, etc.
Q: For exams taken at ODS how do I know my exam will be safe and the student will get no unfair advantage?
A: ODS recognizes the importance of insuring the integrity of the testing process. ODS has developed a very systematic and secure procedure for test administration, including safeguards for protection of the exams and trained proctors. No other accommodations are provided other than what you have listed on the Adaptive Examination Request Form and what the student is allowed to receive through documentation.
