Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Are all the campus buildings accessible? How wide are the residence had doorways and what is the accessibility of the bathrooms?

Answer: The University of Missouri-Columbia campus is programmatically accessible. Most buildings have elevators and/or chairlifts. Should your class be held in an inaccessible location, the Office of Disability Services will work with the registrar's office to secure an accessible location for your class.


Question: Will anyone assist me in arranging my schedule to include the required classes and still have enough time to go from one classroom in one building to another classroom in another building?

Answer: Your academic advisor should be able to accommodate you if you let them know your concerns.


Question: Will I be able to reach and use all the equipment in laboratories? If not, what arrangements must I make?

Answer: All courses must be accessible to you. The appropriate accommodations will be made; however, it's your responsibility to let the Office of Disability Services know if a laboratory or laboratory activity is not accessible to you.


Question: If I need special adaptations to access computers, who will provide them?

Answer: The Adaptive Computing Technology Center will loan equipment if it is for short term use, however, if it's for long term use your or sponsoring agency will have to provide the equipment for your personal use.


Question: If I need adaptations to access the library catalog system, who will arrange for them?

Answer: The University of Missouri-Columbia Library has a designated librarian to work with students with mobility impairments to access the catalogue and the stacks.


Question: If the college has a large campus, is there accessible transportation, such as a lift-equipped van, to get from one area to another? Are there curb cuts and smooth sidewalks that I can manage with a wheelchair?

Answer: The University of Missouri-Columbia has an accessible van that will take you from building to building. This will need to be arranged in advance through the Office of Disability Services. There are curbs cut throughout the campus and the terrain is smooth for the most part.


Question: Is driver evaluation and training available?

Answer: No


Question: If my wheelchair needs repair, can I get it done locally?

Answer: Yes. There are a couple of places within Columbia that will repair wheelchairs. Check with the coordinator of services.


Question: Does the city have an accessible bus system?

Answer: There is public transportation within the city limits of Columbia. The city also has a Para Transit system that you will need to make an application for. Their phone number is: (573) 874-7290


Question: What assistance is available to locate and hire personal care attendants? What are my responsibilities regarding this, and what is the responsibility of the Office of Disability Services?

Answer: The Office of Disability Services is not federally mandated to provide this service. This is the sole responsibility of the student with the disability. The Career Center will allow students to post notices for personal care attendants on their website. You can also post flyers throughout the campus.
