Q. What is your position in the Office of Disability Services?
R. I am the Coordinator of Learning Programs. I coordinate services for students with learning disabilities and ADHD. I meet with students on a weekly basis to do study skills and time management activities. I am a liaison between faculty/administrators and the student.
Q. What influenced your decision to work with students with disabilities?
R. I am disabled myself. I have had an interest in disability services since my undergraduate career. I believe that students with disabilities should be afforded the same rights as non-disabled students in their pursuit of a college degree. I also believe that with these rights come the same responsibilities as any other student.
Q. What do you most enjoy about working with students with disabilities?
R.
From the time students come in as freshmen to the time they leave as seniors, I am able to witness incredible growth in them as individuals. It is very gratifying to see how independent they have become and how this independence enables them to be contributing members of their community.
Q. What do you find most challenging about your position?
R. I find most challenging the beginning of each semester. This is the time when we are setting up accommodations for many, many students at once.
Q. Any "words of wisdom" to give to students with disabilitis about utilizing services in ODS?
R. Be proactive! This is your college career. You should use this time as practice. Treat college like a job! This is your job for the time being.
